Dr. Shawn McCracken earned the biggest payday of his tournament poker career, taking down the Heartland Poker Tour Main Event at Ameristar Kansas City for $91,123.
McCracken, from Bolivar, MO made it through a field of 279 entries to score the win. He defeated Travis Hiteshew of Springfield, IL heads-up, with Hiteshew earning $58,238 as runner-up.
The tournament pretty much ended one hand before the final hand, the two players getting just about even stacks in the middle, McCracken with two pair and Hiteshew with Ace-King. McCracken held and eliminated Hiteshew the very next hand.
"I'm just happy, I've had several friends who have won (HPT titles) like Shawn Roberts," said McCracken.
Third place went to Nick Jivkov of Des Plains, IL, earning $39,024. Jovkov was eliminated by McCracken a few hands after Jivkov missed on a ton of outs with McCracken all in for his tournament life, their stacks flipping at that point.
The infamous Kansas City Monday Night Poker crew, including Blair and Grant Hinkle, James Mackey, Cash Carpenter, Ted Forshey and more, came out cheering for Pug - aka Christopher Juul. Pug's run came to an end in 4th place when he lost a race against Hiteshew (A7 < QJ), cashing for $27,535.
Jay McVeigh, from Shawnee, KS, was 6th at HPT Kansas City 18 months ago. He followed that up finishing 5th in this Main Event. Short-stacked much of the day, he moved in with Six-Seven suited and ran in to the pocket Queens of Jivkov. McVeigh cashed for $20,601.
Jivkov put Daniel Thomas of Lincoln NE all-in during SB vs BB battles a few times, once doubling up Thomas. The final hand for Thomas came when he called off his stack preflop holding Ace-Six, but he ran in to the Ace-Ten of Jivkov and was out in 6th place ($16,640)
Juul doubled through Beau Wilshire from Shawnee, KS (TT > A9) and Wilshire went all-in the very next hand, finding himself well ahead of Shawn McCracken - all-in preflop AJ vs. KJ. McCracken, however, flopped top two pair for the elimination of Wilshire in 7th place ($13,866).
The biggest pot of the early part of play was a huge cooler, as Kansas City's Joe Maggio has his pocket Aces cracked, all-in preflop against the Queens of Jivkov. It was Jivkov rivering a straight for the elimination and a big chiplead. Maggio went out in 8th place ($11,489).
There was an elimination on the first hand of final table play, as short-stacked Michael Hahn was knocked out by Shawn McCracken (A8 > K2). Hahn cashed for $9,924. Former HPT Champions who cashed in the Kansas City Main Event included Hahn (9th), Shawn Roberts (10th), Matt Paten (12th) and Greg Jennings (28th).
